Idealism, cynicism, and being paranoid: Pt Deux

Throughout his life, Sima Yi had accomplished plenty of military victories. In fact, he was later given the authority to command the army within the capital. Below were some of his Batman moments.

1. Kill Meng Da
Not to be confused with Kill Bill, Kill Meng Da was a story of how a vital disregard for the SOP could save a nation. When Cao Cao was still alive, he viewed Meng Da as an important talent. Once it came to Cao Rui, things changed. Meng Da felt like some kind of persona non grata and things began to kick into gear. Because war is all about the options available and not about morals, Zhuge Liang decided to form a temporary alliance with Meng Da. This was despite repeated warnings that Meng Da was untrustworthy. One would attack from outside, the other attacking from within. Going by the Batman gambit rule, Meng Da was confident that Sima Yi wouldn't arrive that fast. The only problem? Sima Yi just threw the SOP out of the window.

Deng Xian: You sure that Sima Yi won't be coming?

Meng Da: He has no choice but to obey the protocol. He can't just say *bleep* the SOP. I don't care whether his tigress wife is in charge of the SOP. He will need around a month to gain permission to mobilise the troops.

Deng Xian: Erm, uncle. There's a reason why I asked this question.

Meng Da: It's a stupid question.

Deng Xian: No, it's not. You better go take a look who's currently downstairs waiting for... you, I guess.

So how did Sima Yi's Batman gambit work? He was able to predict what Meng Da was thinking when he decided to stage an uprising via his territory at Xincheng. On one hand, Sima Yi had to contend with the unwanted baggage of being untrustworthy. Yes, Cao Pi trusted him. But no, Cao Cao didn't. If Sima Yi was to throw the SOP out of the window, that'd create trouble for himself. After all, Cao Rui had just assumed power and anything could happen. Those who know how it felt to be fall guy/girl should be able to understand what happened when people don't trust you. Either they would ignore you or jump on you. If this sounds familiar, that's because I have a history of being a schoolyard bullying victim. Sima Yi knew it as well. The only problem? Meng Da underestimated Cao Rui's distrust towards him. That's where Sima Yi exploited the situation. If quashing the rebellion failed, there's a 50-50 chance of Sima Yi getting away because Meng Da was effectively isolated in the Wei royal court. If it's a success, Sima Yi would be called a hero.

On the other hand, quashing the rebellion had to be done asap. Given a foolproof chance, Meng Da would surely rebel. Yet, it must be pointed out that the reason why Sima Yi knew about the deal was due to a leaker named Shen Yi. Once Zhongda understood what's going on, he did that one vital preparation sealing Meng Da's fate. And that's to play mind games.

By sending letters to Meng Da, Sima Yi wasn't interested in playing it nice. Rather, it was meant to make the opponent hesitate. Eventually, the same guy would still rebel. Given a choice between a second chance or remaining as a persona non grata, it's very easy for Sima Yi to guess Meng Da's final decision. At the same time, Zhuge Liang would also be sending more letters to further convince Meng Da in... well, re-defecting. Meng Da was only interested in personal gain. The rest could burn in hell for all he cared. Cao Rui would represent a poorer bet compared to Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi used this mentality against Meng Da. Coupled with ignoring the SOP, he was able to stage a surprise siege on Xincheng. People tend to do all sorts of stuff once in hysteria mode. The Salem witch trials proved this to be very true. Sima Yi was merely doing the same thing. It's not really that hard if you're to consider the fact that no real efforts were made during the eight-day period.

Verdict and outcome:
It's like trying to understand whether the Libyan model would really work on North Korea. Gaddafi was effectively another Meng Da because he didn't have China. Kim Jong-un won't end up like Meng Da because he has that one friend Gaddafi didn't have. Again, it's China. Trust me when I say China has the bigger stick compared to the U.S when it comes to disciplinary action.

2, Born in the year of the dog
It's official. After that fateful interview involving a problematic boss and an equally problematic employee (not to mention the 180 degrees part), Sima Yi had no choice but to protect himself. And how did he protect himself? You don't have to be born in the year of the dog to act like a dog. Even if you act like a dog, it doesn't make you any less human. Trust me, I was treated like a dog from Henderson Primary School to Gan Eng Seng School (because there's no primary school version in the 90s) to ITE Dover to my NSF days at 32 SIB. And it got nothing to do with the fact that I was born in the year of the dog. This is not to say that everyone was guilty of wearing the same mask. There were nice people here and there (Ms Komala of 32 SIB, I still remember you, believe it or not). Unfortunately, it took more than just a few nice people to heal a broken person.

[帝于是勤于吏职,夜以忘寝,至于刍牧之间,悉皆临履,由是魏武意遂安。]
Above sentence indicated that in order to live peacefully instead of getting another tangkap threat, Sima Yi had no choice but to choose the most Singaporean way to live. Namely, work, work, and overwork. Under normal circumstances, there's only this much the human body can take before shutting down when it comes to working. That's why people in certain countries like Singapore, Japan, and South Korea are susceptible to dying young. And I'm not talking about biathlons and triathlons. In order to live, Sima Yi had no choice but to risk death by being the typical Singaporean/Japanese/South Korean.

Verdict and outcome:
To act dumb is to be smart. To act smart is to be dumb. Maybe that's why smarter kids have a higher chance of being bullied from Henderson Primary School to Gan Eng Seng School to ITE Dover. Either you're too smart to be ignored or people mistook you for a spastic kid. As for Zhongda, he disguised himself as a dog in order to survive like a wolf.

3. The wolf was smarter than the dragon because elitism is a lie.
[先是,亮使至,帝问曰:“诸葛公起居何如,食可几米?” 对曰:“三四升。” 次问政事,曰:“二十罚已上皆自省览。” 帝既而告人曰:“诸葛孔明其能久乎!”]

Okay, it's not really that. The wolf wasn't smarter than the dragon. Just that the dragon was a master of organising things to manipulate the situation (which was proven beyond doubt via the Longzhong strategy and his ability to boss an army) while the wolf was a master of turning opportunism into momentum (I'll come to that later). You can't say Superman is weaker than Batman, but I think Batman actually won.

Above scene was during the Battle of Wuzhang Plains where Zhuge Liang would eventually die like a Singaporean/Japanese/South Korean. Give credit where it's due, Zhuge Liang was the upright guy. That's why he's still such a widely admired cultural icon in China and beyond (although we also have to thank Luo Guanzhong as well for his #fakenews otherwise known as The Romance of the Three Kingdoms). But Zhuge Liang wasn't God. He couldn't prevent things going downhill after the fiasco at Jieting. Granted he was to blame for this. He should have placed Wang Ping and Zhao Yun as the chief commanders with Ma Su and Deng Zhi as the second in command. He did the reverse and that's how his northern campaign failed. His first failure would result in the other battles either lost or yielding less than what was desired. After all, there were only three paths linking his backyard to Cao Wei's backyard. With one gate shut, it's actually very easy for the opposition to guard the remaining two (i.e. Chencang and the route along the Han River).

Zhongda: So how's Mr Zhuge? How much carbohydrate has he taken?

Kongming's envoy: Three to four sheng.

Zhongda *thinking to himself*: Okay, that's natural.

Zhongda: So how's Mr Zhuge? How does he spend his day?

Kongming's envoy: He has already recorded twenty minor punishments in the catalogue.

After the envoy left...

Zhongda: Men, guys, and people... Zhuge Kongming is going to die very soon.

How does one translate the term "二十罚已上皆自省览"? Wikipedia has its... well, own explanation. I tried to do my own explanation, I'm not sure how accurate it is. Either way, Zhongda should have a very good knowledge of Kongming at that time. After Cao Zhen passed away, Sima Yi became the Chief of Army. Much earlier on, a certain Shu Han talent called Huang Quan defected to Cao Wei. Poor Gongheng had nowhere to go after Liu Bei suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Lu Xun. He couldn't defect to Wu, he could only defect to Wei (note that Liu Bei stationed him at Jiangbei, which was effectively the porch to the Wei portion of Jing Province). It could be at this time where Sima Yi started knowing about his once and future opponent. One can only imagine how insane Zhongda's memory level was. It's like remembering pointless things happening between 2012 and 2013... oh, that's me. Not Zhongda.

Note: Above story is a true story. Seriously, it's true. But I think Ryan and Patrick have forgotten about it.

Fast forward to the Battle of Wuzhang Plains and it's safe to say that Zhongda allowed Kongming to self-destruct. The only problem? Zhongda wasn't God, he couldn't predict when Kongming would fulfil that death "prophecy". It's like Guo Jia doing the same thing concerning Sun Ce. They're going to die anyway, but the important question is when?

3-4 sheng of rice was actually the standard for a normal human being's dietary intake. I got the info from the internet so you may need to double confirm with any of your dietician friends or anyone currently working in the field of nutritional science.

To perform the natural extent of tasks given, natural intake is a must. When it comes to the unnatural extent of tasks given, unnatural intake is a must. More things to do must eat more. It's not just the physical because your brain needs proper nutrition to function normally.

Verdict and outcome:
Kongming's willpower was anti-human in nature, but Zhongda sensed something else apart from death via overwork: The enemy was running low on food supplies. No one told him that. But the ability to connect the dots instead of just looking at the dots enabled him to know things which others were unable to perceive. In this case, it's connecting Zhuge Liang's way of doing things to the need for higher nutritional intake (i.e. Sima Yi most likely assumed Zhuge Liang would need more than just 3-4 shengs of rice). It's like asking me whether North Korea will keep its nukes. I doubt so. Claudia Kim has got no choice but to denuke. Pyongyang's situation is definitely stickier than Kongming's scenario. Remember what I said about China having the bigger stick than the U.S? I hope this doesn't sound too Batman'esque.

3. Counter-intuition: The path to critical thinking
People enjoy laughing at us Singaporeans. They say we're so intelligent, we actually lost the ability to think critically. To think out of the box is to go against the crowd. I'm not saying rebel for the sake of rebelling. What I mean is this: Don't overrate the intuitive approach, value what is counter-intuitive.

The Wu forces were invading again. The people were forced to flee. And we got two fellows debating what to do. You have Cao Shuang, he's ancient China's equivalent of an MP's kid. Then you have the persona non grata of the moment, Sima Zhongda.

Cao Shuang suggested hitting a retreat. After all, the enemy was nearing [曹爽曰:“今不能修守沔南而留百姓,非长策也。”].

Sima Yi played the no-man, he pointed out the people were nearing Mian'nan, where the good guys were being stationed. If the good guys retreat, they lose. The good guys must stay and fortify. If not, the folks would just run back and raise the white flag. That'd be disastrous, that's Sima Yi's logic [帝以沔南近贼,若百姓奔还,必复致寇,宜权留之。]. Suffice to say, the enemy was running on a high momentum. Cao Shuang was only intelligent enough to see the momentum, but Sima Yi was smart enough to understand the momentum. Seeing and understanding are two different things together. Any teacher disagreeing with me deserves to be fired, any parent disagreeing with me is... well, dumb.

Zhongda's logic was this: Things that reached places of safety would be safe while those reaching places of danger would be endangered. Victory and defeat depend on the situation, safety and danger depend on the momentum. To command the soldiers, one must analyse both [凡物致之安地则安,危地则危。故兵书曰‘成败,形也;安危,势也’。形势,御众之要,不可以不审。]. You can't have victory without safety or the risk of defeat without danger. During 2016, the media made a fatal mistake. They could analyse the situation, but they couldn't analyse the momentum. As a result, everyone apart from Republican voters were shocked to see the GOP winning the popular votes for the Congress seats (ironically, Hillary Clinton also won the popular votes. Just that the electors didn't seem to like her for some reason). To be fair, though, I also thought the Democrats would take the nation by a storm of blue.

[设令贼以二万人断沔水,三万人与沔南诸军相持,万人陆梁柤中,将何以救之?]

Sima Yi was making a logical hypothesis here. If the enemy occupied the Mian River with 20K men, 30K men going up against the defensive forces at Mian'nan, and 10K men attacking Zhazhong, how can the good guys win? It's quite likely that the good guys were not just stationed at Mian'nan, but rather deployed in the surrounding region as well. Hence, Cao Shuang's decision to retreat back to Mian'nan itself. No prizes for guessing correctly that the good guys lost it. Badly [爽不从,卒令还南。贼果袭破柤中,所失万计。].

Verdict and outcome:
Cao Shuang's error reflected that of the political pundits during the 2016 elections. While they guessed correctly that Clinton would win the people's votes, they guessed wrongly that the Democrats would avenge the humiliation Obama suffered from 2010 till the end of his tenure. Which now comes to the most interesting question: Where will the swing voters momentum go this year? Will it be away from the alt-right Trumpocalypse or they be running away from the far-left deep state? I won't be surprised if the swing voters will only end up running in one direction instead of splitting up like Harry "the shota style" Styles and Taylor "will she be N time lucky?" Swift.

Needless to say, the need to strike a balance between knowing the situation and momentum is key to understanding instead of just seeing. That's how Batman is able to maximise his gambit. By my guess, that is.

4. All your base are belong to us
The end was nigh, the enemy readying their arms. A usurper declared himself a king, his intent nothing less than taking over the entire kingdom. For he was never a satisfied man.

This is my retelling of history, nothing to do with the alt-right or far left. Gongsun Yuan, styled Wenyi [公孙渊,字文懿]. He's no Don T, he's unrelated to Hill Clinton. But he's definitely a deplorable crook. Long story short, he declared independence. He lobbied for Sun Quan's support and he got it. Cao Wei was in trouble. Liaodong was effectively the gateway between China and the Korean Peninsula. To have a foreigner declaring a state of belligerence was very likely the last thing the Koreans ever wanted to see. This was all about national security, not monocultural racism. I need to finish this post asap, so I'll dive straight into the Batman tactic.

Translate: To leave his walls behind and take to flight would be the best plan for Gongsun Yuan. To take his position in Liaodong and resist our large forces would be the next best. But if he stays in Xiangping and defends it, he will be captured... Only a man of insight and wisdom is able to weigh his own and the enemy's relative strength, and so give up something beforehand. But this is not something Gongsun Yuan can do. On the contrary, he will think that our army, alone and on a long-distance expedition, cannot long keep it up. He is certain to offer resistance on the Liao River first and defend Xiangping afterwards... A hundred days for going, another hundred days for the attack, still another hundred days for coming back, and sixty days for rest; thus one year is sufficient.

Credit: Wikipedia

First, let's see how Zhongda tried seeing things from Wenyi's point of view.

[弃城预走,上计也。据辽水以距大军,次计也。坐守襄平,此成擒耳]
[To leave his walls behind and take to flight would be the best plan for Gongsun Yuan. To take his position in Liaodong and resist our large forces would be the next best. But if he stays in Xiangping and defends it, he will be captured]

Gongsun Yuan was currently camped at Xiangping. If he decided to retreat in advance, he'd have secured an advantage. By retreating further inward, it'd make pursuit all the harder for Sima Yi and defending all the easier for the opponent.

[据辽水以距大军,次计也]
[To take his position in Liaodong and resist our large forces would be the next best.]

This indicated the second best approach for Wenyi. Hog the river bank in order to hold back the enemy. This would be the most sensible tactic in the eyes of a commander. So long there's a river separating two forces, the Liaodong faction would be at a defensive advantage. Hence...

[坐守襄平,此成擒耳]
[Hold fort at Xiangping? But if he stays in Xiangping and defends it, he will be captured...]

That one confirm kenna tangkap and mati liao...

[今悬军远征,将谓不能持久,必先距辽水而后守]
[He is certain to offer resistance on the Liao River first and defend Xiangping afterwards...]

This was Sima Yi channelling his inner Batman once again. Gongsun Yuan knew the enemy forces would have to travel a long distance to fight a war. Hence, he would surely hold fort at the River Liao to assume a defensive approach. And guess what? Zhongda allowed this guy to have his way. Why?

Because... Sima Yi was Batman.

[惟明者能深度彼己,豫有所弃,此非其所及也]
[Only a man of insight and wisdom is able to weigh his own and the enemy's relative strength, and so give up something beforehand. But this is not something Gongsun Yuan can do]

Taking down Xiangping would mean nothing if the Wei forces got themselves hemmed in as a result. Hence, Sima Yi's damning verdict on his opponent.

The battle was effectively done in three stages.

Stage one would be preparation.
[往百日,还百日,攻百日,以六十日为休息,一年足矣]
[A hundred days for going, another hundred days for the attack, still another hundred days for coming back, and sixty days for rest; thus one year is sufficient]

Above statement was Cao Rui asking Sima Yi how long it would take for the army to be mobilised. One year would be all it took for the battle to end.

100 days for going: This refers to the forces moving forward from the base to attack the enemy.
100 days for coming back: This refers to the amount of time for the forces to return back to the base.
100 days for the attack: This refers to the amount of time needed to end the fight.
60 days of rest: This was to ensure the soldiers had enough time to rest.

The problem being faced by the Wei forces was losing the fight of attrition. The reason why Gongsun Yuan was able to be so arrogant for quite some time was due to Cao Wei's unsuccessful attempt to take down the enemy through this method. In war, the defending party would have the advantage, not the attacking army. Defending the ground requires a lesser amount of troops compared to those attacking the ground. The familiarity of terrain and military discipline are what make this possible. This also explained why Sima Yi was able to predict what Gongsun Yuan would do. Effectively speaking, one can say Sima Yi knew Gongsun Yuan would self-destruct due to the victories he had so far. The entire order of preparation should look something like this: 60 days of rest>100 days of travelling>100 days of fighting>100 days for coming back.

Stage two would be engaging the enemy. In the first phase, Sima Yi planted many flags and banners south of River Liao (note that the enemy was encamped at the northern end). This was to draw the enemy's sight towards the dummy force. In the second phase, the main army led by Sima Yi crossed the river to the northern side. Then the next thing his men realised, Sima Yi commanded the boats to be burnt and barricades to be built around the bank. By right, the enemy should be able to see the barricades being built. By wrong, they never realised the other enemy force across the river was a dummy army. Simply put, no one in his right mind would try to attack the so-called smaller army. Quite obviously, Sima Yi's generals thought their boss might have gone barking mad like a mad dog. The reason why being that Sima Yi decided to move ahead towards Xiangping instead of staying put.

Sima Yi reasoned that Gongsun Yuan was hell-bent on overpowering them. Hence, fighting a war of attrition would be what the enemy wanted [贼坚营高垒,欲以老吾兵也。攻之,正入其计]. The word 老 in this context is a euphemism for dead. In fact, the Liaodong force running out to meet them was as large as a few ten thousand strong in a bid to prevent Sima Yi's army from progressing [文懿果遣步骑数万,阻辽隧,坚壁而守,南北六七十里,以距帝].

Secondly, if he was to attack Xiangping straightaway, the Liaodong army would be alerted and stage a fightback as a result. This was due to a combination of Xiangping having only minimum security and how panic could easily result in a backlash (that's so long inner turmoil wasn't there). In this situation, the Wei army would be defeated [贼大众在此,则巢窟虚矣。我直指襄平,则人怀内惧,惧而求战,破之必矣]. Because haste was of the utmost importance for Sima Yi (i.e. 100 days to travel from the south to somewhere near Korea), it's very likely that he was, in fact, leading an army of a lesser number. Interestingly enough, Sima Yi only entered the fray in the latter half of the war. In other words, previous failures would have given him an idea of how many men Gongsun Wenyi had at his disposal.

Then came the best part of stage two: [遂整阵而过。贼见兵出其后,果邀之。帝谓诸将曰:“所以不攻其营,正欲致此,不可失也。”乃纵兵逆击,大破之,三战皆捷。贼保襄平,进军围之。]

Sneak behind the enemy, expose yourself, enemy attacks. Then you fight back in the most epic manner ever. With the river effectively becoming the Liaodong forces dead end, Sima Yi secured a crushing victory. Remember, this current army had rested enough. At the same time, a lesser quantity means better quality when it comes to war. Gongsun Yuan might have the quantity, but Sima Yi got the quality. And that's not considering the dummy army at the south blowing horns and making all sorts of noise to further destabilise the Liaodong troops. The historical text never mentioned it, but it should be tactical common sense. Really. A little wonder why Sun Quan wrote in his final (?) letter to Gongsun Yuan that Sima Yi was some sort of military god capable of unpredictable moves [初,文懿闻魏师之出也,请救于孙权。权亦出兵遥为之声援,遗文懿书曰:“司马公善用兵,变化若神,所向无前,深为弟忧之。”].

The third part would be the decisive stage. Erm, there's a problem, though.

Subordinate: Boss, we got a problem here.

Zhongda: What? Please don't tell me it's that tigress again.

Subordinate: I'm afraid it's worse than your tigress. The climate is *bleep*ing up the progress. The water level is rising and the generals are talking about moving camp.

Zhongda: Just proceed, don't slow down. If anyone makes any noise, I'll just execute them like a boss. Because I am the boss here.

Seriously, the Wei troops were in a panic. The water level was rising and you can't blame them for worrying whether progress would be halted because of the climate change. A high ranking general acted against orders, Sima Yi executed him like a boss [都督令史张静犯令,斩之,军中乃定]. And because he proved himself to be the real boss of the battlefield, everyone else had no choice but to...

There's a hiccup, though. The enemy ventured out to forage for food and fuel. Sima Yi, however, stayed his hand. His logic?
[Now, the rebels are numerous and we are few; the rebels are hungry and we are full. With flood and rain like this, we cannot employ our effort. Even if we take them, what is the use? Since I left the capital, I have not worried about the rebels attacking us, but have been afraid they might flee. Now, the rebels are almost at their extremity as regards supplies, and our encirclement of them is not yet complete. By plundering their cattle and horses or capturing their fuel-gatherers, we will be only compelling them to flee. War is an art of deception; we must be good at adapting ourselves to changing situations. Relying on their numerical superiority and helped by the rain, the rebels, hungry and distressed as they are, are not willing to give up. We must make a show of inability to put them at ease; to alarm them by taking petty advantages is not the plan at all.]

Credit: Wikipedia

However, Wikipedia failed to mention Sima Yi stating that it's never a fair deal to suffer losses for the sake of more supplies [以四击一,正令半解,犹当为之。是以不计死伤,与粮竞也].

Once the rain was over, the siege commenced once again. The pace of progress was frighteningly fast. Then again, you'd think Sima Yi wouldn't start planning in advance the organisation of resources and logistics in preparation for the siege?

Verdict and outcome:
There's no other outcome. Batman won again. Interestingly, it seemed that even the Koreans viewed Gongsun Yuan as more than just a nuisance. Unlike the Tang dynasty where Silla had to fight off the Chinese invasion, the Koreans seemed to be on friendly, if not at least friendlier terms with the Chinese. In this case, the Cao Wei faction. In fact, even the King of Korea sent help.
Erm, no. Not Claudia Kim. History has never recorded Hwang Jin-yi of doing a Xi Shi, thank you very much.
More specifically, the King of Goguryeo sent a couple of big shots together with a few thousand men to aid Sima Yi even though he quite likely never saw Zhongda before (cue the 180 degrees moment that spooked Cao Cao to no end).

This fight had to be Sima Yi's greatest Batman moment. Gongsun Yuan's failure lies in not understanding the things to forsake in the name of the greater goal. No one was telling him to screw the national constitution. This was why abandoning Xiangping would create trouble for Sima Yi. Which of course never happened in the first place. Knowing what you have is half the battle won, but knowing what the enemy has would complete the picture. There are things which can be thrown away. For example, Claudia Kim's nukes. Then there are things which are not meant to be abandoned. For example, Max Thunder and the American troops. Seriously, you think bilateral denuking was an agenda? Go look back on when Claudia Kim flipped the table. Then you'll know what I'm talking about. And besides, nothing was said about bilateral denuking from the DPRK man when Trump first floated DMZ as a potential location for the much-hyped 12th June@SGH.

Winner:

Okay, I'm totally drained right now. I just need some sleep. But not before this song.

Idealism, cynicism, and being paranoid

At the end of this post, I did mention something about Sima Yi being the focus of my next post. Well, there you have it. A man who started off as an idealist ended up being a cynic. Which finally became... well, paranoid.

Important note: There will be instances where Sima Yi is referred to as the Emperor. This is due to the historical source coming from the Book of Jin. Even though the first emperor of the Jin dynasty was his grandson Sima Yan, the scribes during the era had to show the highest respect possible for the wolf who wasn't really a big bad wolf. Hence, the term Emperor.

Note: The original post has to be split into two. Too long a read. Also, I never claimed myself to be the next Sima Yi. Any assumption otherwise must be backed up by an MRI scan proving that I'm a genius.

If the late LKY could be compared to Zhuge Liang...
Then it'd only be natural for local Singaporeans to ask: Who is our Sima Yi? While I'm sure we won't be seeing the wolf to (the late) Mr Lee... erm, I mean Mr Zhuge's dragon, I believe we need to get some facts right about the man commonly associated with a wolf.

1. Sima Yi wasn't a treacherous scum stealing power right under the emperor's nose. But then you got his two sons, Sima Shi and Sima Zhao.

2. Sima Yi was indeed a henpecked genius. Well, sorta.

3. Sima Yi was an idealist.

4. Because the world was so screwed up, Sima Yi became a cynic. In George Carlin's own words, he's a disappointed idealist.

So what kind of cynic was Sima Yi? I'll just copy and paste this whole chunk of text first.

3. While he's a cynic, there were those intelligent enough to see exceptional wisdom and capability in him. Yang Jun, a well-known figure in recognising exceptional talent, was one of them. Another renowned official by the name of Cui Yan went one step further by telling Sima Lang that his younger brother was... well, smarter than him. So much for sibling rivalry. [南阳太守同郡杨俊名知人,见帝,未弱冠,以为非常之器。尚书清河崔琰与帝兄朗善,亦谓朗曰:“君弟聪亮明允,刚断英特,非子所及也。”]

4. Obama once said that cynicism is a sorry kind of wisdom, but Sima Yi was... well, some kind of idealist. [汉末大乱,常慨然有忧天下心。]

No hope=rage quit
One of the questions surrounding Sima Yi's start to greatness was a big WHY. Why did Xun Yu recommend him to Cao Cao? The two of them hailed from different places. Xun Yu was from Yingchuan while Sima Yi was from Henei. Granted both of them were from the same region (i.e. the modern day Henan), but using it as a reason sounds a bit too farfetched. After all, all the local talents Xun Yu recommended to Cao Cao (apart from Sima Yi) were all from Yingchuan. It's very likely that Sima Yi's fame actually went beyond his backyard. After all, every intelligent guy was from Henan. Well, sorta anyway.

However, there's a problem. Sima Yi was already a disappointed idealist by then. In Obama's own words, he now had a sorry kind of wisdom. So what did Sima Yi see that made him into such a sorry figure?

We have to start from where things went wrong. There were two emperors prior to the current one under Cao Cao's surveillance: The Huan Emperor [桓帝] and Ling Emperor [灵帝]. Under one joker and a clown, the nation erupted into chaos. First to go was the political stability. It's like the liberals having to deal with Trumpocalypse. It's like the conservatives having to deal with the deep state. You know society was effectively *bleep*ed. You know the people were effectively *bleep*ed. You know the nation was effectively *bleep*ed. Simply put, everything was effectively *bleep*ed.

You got the Yellow Turban uprising where the antagonists were an army of turban-wearing terrorists. Erm no, they're not Muslims. They're just a large bunch of sorry folks led by some kind of holy man named Zhang Jue [张角] with his two equally holy bros, Zhang Liang [张梁] and Zhang Bao [张宝]. Of course, they're anything but holy. In Rose McGowan's own words (?), they were running a cult.

Nearer to the imperial backyard, we got Yuan Shao and He Jin [何进, not Ho Ching] staging a "kill'em all" action against the eunuchs controlling the court. In particularly, ten of those known as the Ten Attendants [十常侍]. Things got out of control, Dong Zhuo stepped in, and... and... and... *bleep* how am I going to describe the resultant carnage and orgy? Okay, here it goes. *takes a deep breath* he cruelly slaughtered those against him and *bleep*ed every beautiful girl in the palace, be they single, (formerly) taken, or attached. And to make things worse, what he did in the palace, his men did to the civilians.

Thankfully, a coalition was formed to take down the despot. However, every faction was a selfish bastard. Yuan Shao was a selfish bastard, Yuan Shu was a selfish bastard, Zhang Miao [张邈] was a selfish bastard, Han Fu [韩馥] was a selfish bastard, etc. I'm pretty sure Bao Xin [鲍信] was a good guy, but only two amigos actually cared enough to do something which would have made Obama happy. Namely, Rose McGowan and Ito Shiori... oops, sorry wrong channel. This should be Channel History, not Channel Socio-Politics.

I mean Cao Cao and Sun Jian.

Commercial break: Henan
I suddenly feel like saying something about Henan. No, this isn't a tourism ad, let alone some kind of commercial from a super PAC-man. You see, the ancestors of the modern day Chinese Singaporeans hailed from the Jing Province. Or rather, the region which was formerly known as such during the Han-Three Kingdoms era. It doesn't matter whether your surname is Ng, Lee, or Low. Your ancestors definitely hailed from the Jing Province. Incidentally, that's where Zhuge Liang was born. Hope I won't get into trouble over the LKY comparison.

So what about the surname Kuok? I did a bit of checking. And guess what? There seems to be a common ground between me and Robert Kuok. Namely, the surname Kuok/Quek/Kok/etc is more of a northern surname. Northerners in China tend to be scholars instead of the farmers in the south. And yes, Henan is counted as northern China. China has two rivers: Yellow River and Yangtze River. The latter is what one may call the southern river as it flows through the southern half of China. The Yellow River, on the other hand, flows through the northern half of China. Perhaps the most notable Kuoks (excluding Robert and me) of Henan would be Kuok Tze Yee [郭子仪] and Kuok Kah [郭嘉].

In fact, my next post under this label will most likely be on one of the two Kuoks. Not a question of whether it's Robert or me, but rather a question of whether it's Kuok Tze Yee or Kuok Kah. Okay, I admit it's gonna be Kuok Kah. Poor dude died young, but at least he lived life to the max.

Needless to say, Sima Yi was also a Henan'er. Actually, the same went for his wife.

Any resemblance to any girl, local Singaporean or otherwise, is deeply regrettable. I don't work for Koei.

How Cao Cao got his man (minus the wife no matter how hot she was)
[汉建安六年,郡举上计掾。魏武帝为司空,闻而辟之。帝知汉运方微,不欲屈节曹氏,辞以风痹,不能起居。魏武使人夜往密刺之,帝坚卧不动。]

The setting was the sixth year of the Jian'an calendar. Going by the BC-AD calendar, it should be 201 AD. We all know Cao Cao was a man seeking talented people like a person thirsting after water [i.e. 求贤若渴]. It's quite likely that Sima Yi's fame had gotten way too ahead of himself. In modern speak, the news spread faster than Xiaxue's latest blog post. However, Sima Yi got a problem.

[帝知汉运方微,不欲屈节曹氏...]
Translate: The Emperor knew the fortune of Han was waning, hence his refusal to submit to the Cao.

Cao Cao was a capable ruler. At the same time, Sima Yi cared about the nation and people. So why did he reject such a good proposal? It's like rejecting Obama's offer to serve the nation despite your capability! Sima Yi was truly a genius not inferior to Zhuge Liang. If the Longzhong strategy showcased Kongming's status as a John Morton, then Zhongda's military exploits indicated a genius Batman residing within. I'll get to that later on (hint: It got something to do with a Meng Da).

Sima Yi's situation is like asking me how I saw the not-so-recent Oxley Road saga. Under normal circumstances, people would take sides. Either they'd side with the PAP or they'd side with Lee Hsien Yang, Lee Wei Ling, and Li Sheng Wu. But what if I said I wouldn't take sides? Would that make me a sorry cynic? The answer is no. Why? Because the entire drama was too convoluted to make the accurate call.

Likewise, Sima Yi might have perceived something in a seemingly straightforward situation. And that's the emperor. Later known as the Xian Emperor [献帝], Sima Yi knew this was the bounty everyone was after. People said Cao Cao was the bad guy. I wouldn't be surprised if Sima Yi never denied that. However, he also knew every other faction was after the emperor. Having the emperor was worth so much more than having the final say in the Oxley Road saga. Having the emperor would mean having a political pawn so powerful, the nobles would have no choice but to bend the knee. And that's without the nukes. And that convoluted the situation. Why? Because so long the emperor was around (and alive) in Xuchang, anyone (including Liu Bei because he's a conniving fellow like Cao Cao) could stage a Bonnie and Clyde. Failure wouldn't change the animosity from the nobles, success would result in chaos since the royal court would be in mutiny mode and the entire nation would be... well, destabilised. What else do you expect me to say? A vulgar word or two? Zhongda chose not to do anything in a convoluted situation. Be smart. Be like Zhongda.

[...辞以风痹,不能起居。魏武使人夜往密刺之,帝坚卧不动。]
Translate: Declining the offer in the name of paralysis in the joints, Wei Wu (i.e. Cao Cao's official title in the history) sent men to spy on him. The Emperor lied on his bed without moving.

Okay, so we now got trouble. Cao Cao believed Sima Yi's real identity was either Chow Kheng or Charles King. Therefore, he decided to send spies to confirm his suspicions. No choice, but to keep acting. That was until someone far less capable than the CIA, KGB, or the Mossad blew his cover.

How my radiographer girl bailed me out #truestory
Have you ever tried doing an MRI scan before? No? Well, during my days clearing the linen, I was sharp enough to detect certain things concerning an MRI scan. While the only way for me to get an MRI scan would be verifying whether I'm a genius in Sima Yi's mould, I did overhear radiographers asking patients certain questions while explaining certain things. Basically, you can't have metal implants because that'd affect Magneto's version of the Cerebro. Or something like that. Then you have to be tied up and placed under... well, Magneto's version of the Cerebro.

Now let me say something in the name of self-defence before everybody in the CT-MRI goes after me with a carving knife each. The reason behind the aforementioned scenario was due to my brain having the tendency to register surrounding things, no matter how trivial. While I won't call myself Spiderman, there's no way I can U-turn my brain. Therefore, QUIT ASKING ME ABOUT THAT GIRL'S PHONE NUMBER BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW HER!!!!!!!

Above is part of Zhang Chunhua's historical account. The Chinese during the ancient times didn't think like the northern tribes like Xiongnu and Wuhuan when it came to gender equality. Simply put, the northern nomadic tribes were more into meritocracy than the Chinese. Hence, Zhang Chunhua's account is only about a few lines of text. Yet, from the excerpt above, we get to know a few things.

1. Zhang Chunhua came from the same region (i.e. Henei or the modern day Henan). [河内平皋人也]

2. Storm happens. I'm not talking about Stormy Daniels or Storm from the X-Men, but rather a real storm.

3. Sima Yi loved his books. So much so that he blew his cover in plain sight in the name of protecting his books from the stormy elements (no pun intended). [尝暴书,遇暴雨,不觉自起收之。]

4. It's one thing to blow your own cover, quite another to let your CIA/KGB/Mossad maidservant see what she's not supposed to see. [家惟有一婢见之]

5. Don't mess with Zhang Chunhua. She might look like someone you fancy, but there's nothing fanciful about her doing a Mossad all by herself. And trust me, the Mossad is truly a force de la nature in the world of global espionage. [后乃恐事泄致祸,遂手杀之以灭口,而亲自执爨。]

Moral of the story? Behind every successful man is a capable woman, behind every successful genius is a fierce woman.

[及魏武为丞相,又辟为文学掾,敕行者曰:“若复盘桓,便收之。”]

It's a bit dodgy trying to translate this because I don't know what this position 文学掾 does. For all we know, it's the earliest form of the Speaker of the Parliament. Nah, doubt so. No matter what, Cao Cao issued an ultimatum to Sima Yi: "If you still choose to delay, I'll tangkap you like how #hastalavistakau will tangkap Jib-gor."

No choice. Cao Cao won the fight.

Houston, we got a problem here. And it has a name. I think it's some kind of wolf...
Was Sima Yi a treacherous scum? After all, Cao Cao never trusted him fully unlike the rest of his advisers like Guo Jia, Cheng Yu, Jia Xu, and the two Xuns (i.e. Xun Yu and Xun You). Initially, Sima Yi was tasked with accompanying Cao Cao's son. In this case, it's Cao Pi since he's the crown prince. As some sort of imperial tutor, Sima Yi was a good and faithful servant. So much so that Cao Pi actually trusted him. Eventually, Zhongda would become one of the three officials tasked with guiding his son Cao Rui [曹睿] once he ascended to his father's (and in a certain way, his grandfather's) throne. The other two being Chen Qun (i.e. the AG 陈群) and Cao Zhen (i.e. the Chief of Army 曹真).

Recently, some sort of "wolf" made its rounds on the internet. As for Sima Yi, was he the kind of dog someone spoke about last time around? Or was he more than just a dog? The answer can found below.

[帝内忌而外宽,猜忌多权变。魏武察帝有雄豪志,闻有狼顾相,欲验之。乃召使前行,令反顾,面正向后而身不动。]

Translate: The Emperor was one wary of others while putting up a magnanimous front, he's always full of suspicion and schemes. Wei Wu sensed he's a man of ambition while hearing that he had the visage of a wolf. In an attempt to test him, he (Cao Cao) summoned him (Sima Yi). As Sima Yi turned around, his face was toward the back while the body kept moving forward.

If it wasn't for Gary "no longer a young man" Oldman and Winston Churchill, Sima Yi would have taken the little gold dude home. Okay, that's a joke. No one should ever doubt Mr Oldman's ability. Unless they want Batman to go after them.

This text indicated something one would see from a Stephen movie. Not Stephen "Mr Chow" Chow, but rather Stephen "the heir to Lovecraft's throne" King. Seriously, this guy was a human being, not some kind of owl! Yet, it must be stated that Chinese history has a knack of fibbing certain stuff. This happened to be one of those moments (you should see how Chen Shou described Liu Bei. Like some kind of alien, I kid you not). In comparison, Sima Yi's owl head moment wasn't that bad. Beyond defying the laws of human anatomy, that is. But there's a way to interpret this situation.

Say for example that you're talking to Trump because you're the hero who broke the North Korean nukes deadlock way before 12th of June was announced. With Facebook and your analysis, no less. You have major reservations about his character. Not just him, but pretty much every politician. Maybe except for Bill Haslam. Then again, maybe not.

After a while, you walked away. After all, it's uncomfortable dealing with someone you didn't like. Then Trump shouted your name. You got a shock. But you never turned your head like an owl. Because it's physically impossible. But you still turned around. 180 degrees to be exact. You walked backwards like Michael Jackson doing his moonwalk, only a gazillion times warier. Your head was facing Trump, you didn't have to... well, become an owl.
And you gave him that wolf look minus the snarl.
Conclusion: Sima Yi wasn't a dog. Rather, the man known as Zhongda was a wolf. You don't confuse the two even though they look similar.

His life under Cao Cao, Cao Pi, and Cao Rui was... shall we say, politically uneventful. That's until the fourth generation assumed the seat of power. During Cao Fang's [曹芳] reign, there's a power struggle brewing. Absolute power fell into the hands of... well, not Sima Yi but another Cao. Cao Shuang [曹爽]. The threat sensor was on red alert, Sima Yi sensed aggro was coming. In fact, Cao Shuang was working 24/7 to undermine Sima Yi's authority so that whatever Zhongda had would be transferred to him. Long story short, Sima Yi staged a coup at the Tomb of Gaoping. Not against the emperor, but rather the most dangerous guy called Cao Shuang. The outcome was anything but pretty. Everyone associated with the enemy was executed. [诛曹爽之际,支党皆夷及三族,男女无少长,姑姊妹女子之适人者皆杀之,既而竟迁魏鼎云。]

On the first glance, Sima Yi was protecting himself. But was he?

[既而竟迁魏鼎云。]
Above text showed Sima Yi receiving a cauldron at his own request. It's like Cao Cao asking the emperor for the position of a lord. Which was what he really did. But, there's a problem: Sima Yi rejected the offer to be the chancellor and so many more super good perks of being a wallflower. [二月,天子以帝为丞相,增封颍川之繁昌、鄢陵、新汲、父城,并前八县,邑二万户,奏事不名。固让丞相。
冬十二月,加九锡之礼,朝会不拜。]

If he's really power-hungry, he'd have taken the post. He wouldn't be the kind of political wallflower he chose to be! [固让丞相... 固让九锡] After all, with great power comes a greater right to self-defend! But was that what Sima Yi wanted? The author of the Book of Jin [晋书] only mentioned the extent of Sima Yi's distrust towards his surroundings and even the people around him [迹其猜忍,盖有符于狼顾也。].

This may well be pointing to Sima Yi as a paranoid man. No one knew why he's so paranoid if it's true. However, the below excerpt can give us some clues on how paranoid he was especially at the end of his life.

[先是,预作终制,于首阳山为土藏,不坟不树;作顾命三篇,敛以时服,不设明器,后终者不得合葬。一如遗命。]

Effectively, above statement means two possibilities.

1. Sima Yi had gotten so paranoid, he ended up giving irrational instructions for his funeral. No tombstone, basically no decorations. Only a nameless grave in every sense of the word. Interestingly, he even forbade others to share the same burial spot.

2. Sima Yi was truly acting in the name of self-defence even though he was guilty of over-retaliation against Gongsun Wenyi and Cao Shuang [及平公孙文懿,大行杀戮。诛曹爽之际,支党皆夷及三族,男女无少长,姑姊妹女子之适人者皆杀之...]. In fact, his act of requesting a cauldron could well be a way to self-defend. A cauldron in ancient China was a symbol of political power. Yet, by choosing not to assume the greatest official post in the royal court (i.e. the chancellor was second in power only to the emperor), he might have given us a glimpse on how Batman did his stuff. Seriously, I can only say Sima Yi was living in his own Gotham City.

To be cont'd in Pt Deux...

Le Professeur X, Weasel, and... Peter?

It's official. John has watched Deadpool 2 earlier today. Hopefully, he can write up a review. Even though it's most likely a half-baked one.

And speaking of Deadpool 2...

The Marvel showdown
Not, it's not gonna be Deadpool versus Wolverine. Or even Deadpool versus Cable for that matter. Rather, we have Le Professeur X going against Weasel. Please rest assured that Deadpool will not be involved.

So will it be a case of Louvre versus Sete?
As tempting as it sounds for John to say yes, the answer isn't that straightforward. Let's take a look at the two teams' preferred formation. Namely, that most Marvelous 4-3-3. Be it Le Professeur X or Weasel, it's always 4-3-3. However, there's a decisive difference between their respective 4-3-3.

3 holding mids versus the closest guy to Colossus
#RoboKlopp favours a 3 holding mids approach. While this didn't work out well initially, the team soon grew into it. While it's anybody's guess on whether the likes of James "not the brother of John" Milner and Emre "yes, he can" Can will start, John won't be surprised if Le Professeur X will have an eye on how his opposite number plays his middle 3. By John's estimation, however, Milner will start the game. Because there's not much choice for #RoboKlopp when it comes to linking up play from the back. Alex "North Korea got #RocketMan, Anfield got #RocketOx" Oxlade-Chamberlain is currently not available since he's still recuperating in the FICU (i.e. Footballers' Intensive Care Unit, not some kind of vulgarity).

Assuming Milner starts, #RoboKlopp will be better equipped to deal with C.R Sete. The reason why being that it'd be easier for Liverpool to hold the fort. Instead of the classic four by two approach first made famous by the Germans, #TeamRoboKop will be operating a four by three instead. After all, seven is better than six when it comes to numbers. Needless to say, Milner's role will be to slow down play and pass it long. Not exactly the hardest thing to do in the same way firing a plasma rifle is as easy as ABC to Cable.

As for Le Professeur X, he's got the closest guy to a man of steel. Not some Clark or Piotr, but this amigo.

If Le Professeur X is to win it twice in a row, he will need Casemiro at the top of his game. As the lone defensive anchor, he has to grapple with the deadly three coming from #TeamRoboKop. This may effectively be the closest thing to Colossus going up against Juggernaut. While Colossus is effectively reduced to a comic relief role in the Deadpool movies, seeing the same thing happening to Casemiro would be disastrous. Last season, he was one of the two heroes breaching the Roman fortress of Turin (the other being who else but C.R Sete himself). This time around, Le Professeur X will need his Colossus more than ever.

Marvel+Star Wars=Oddest couple ever
It's like pairing Qi'ra with Deadpool (definitely NOT a wookie because PETA will declare war on someone who is never an otter named John in the first place). It has to be the most absurd pairing of them all. Then again, perhaps George "not Lonesome George" Lucas and Stan "not the Singaporean Mr Lee" Lee will eventually do a crossover of Marvel and Star Wars. Who knows? After all, there's this company by the name of Walt Disney. Before that, however, Le Professeur X has his very own Marvel-Star Wars partnership.

The video indicates someone by the name of Luka "he passes the ball with the power of the Force" Modrić. The picture indicates someone by the name of Toni "he passes the ball with the power of a repulsor beam" Kroos. Let's just call them Luka Skywalker and Toni Stark for now.

Unless something happens, John won't be surprised if Luka Skywalker and Toni Stark will start the game. An interesting question would be how high either or both will play in the name of passing the ball. To make the most out of the attacking wide players while forcing back the Liverpool backline, Le Professeur X needs his Stark-Skywalker duo to string their passes asap instead of just trying to slow down the tempo first. In fact, slowing down the tempo will be inviting the likes of Mohamed "not the Malay version of Salah" Salah, Roberto "the Brazillian Baggio (?)" Firmino, and Sadio "Mané the man" Mané to zerg Casemiro like a pack of wolves tearing into a lone musk ox. #TeamRoboKop may have realised its own attacking potential because John won't be surprised if #RoboKlopp discovered a tactical magic formula of his own. By having three attacking players both fast and furious, #TeamRoboKop can afford to have a gap the size of the Pacific Ocean between the attacking three and back seven. So long the likes of Louvre and Dijk can hold their ground, it should give the attacking trio more than enough time to track back. And once this happens, #TeamRoboKop can easily reorganise and do what #RoboKlopp does best: Die Gegenpress.

Verdict:
Los Blancos will have a hard fight up in their hands. Yes, this sounds like what Sergio "one half of the Super Sergio Bros" Ramos said. But the opposition is a different kind of brigade altogether. Whether it's the Franks from Paris, the Romans from Turin, or the Teutons from Bavaria, none of them boasts the kind of top gear aggression the Anglo Saxons from Merseyside are having right now. Favouring a lone defensive mid means Le Professeur X must deploy Toni Stark and Luka Skywalker closer to Casemiro. To play a compact four by three by which a fast passing game can be done may well be the most ideal way to win it twice in a row. Otherwise, chances are that the greatest prize in continental football (apart from the Euro Cup) will be sailing across the sea and making its home in a city which got Jeremy "double confirm even more top gear than Xiaxue" Clarkson into more trouble since the Mexican Maserati saga. Also, Liverpool tends to do better against attacking teams favouring the continental approach. Pep definitely wasn't amused by that.

And... Peter?
You really have to feel sorry for the initial batch of Deadpool Corps. All of them died a horrible death apart from Domino. You have someone vomiting acid, a tribute to Hollow Man, a black guy, and someone who is... well, homosexual (this is not some sick joke. Shatterstar is really a homosexual). All of them died a horrible death. And that includes Peter. And speaking of Peter, there's another Peter. Before that, let us all take a look at the new gaffer of Les Gunners.

It is NOT John's fault if El Emerytes looks weirdly like Peter Paul Wisdom. Now it must be stated the appointment of El Emerytes wasn't exactly the name getting Les Gooners pumped up. In fact, John won't be surprised if the white half of North London are sniggering right now. After all, Mauricio "five more years of sipping his cappuccino in London" Pochettino has signed a five-year extension.

So is El Emerytes the right man for the job? It must be stated that while he boasts an impressive CV in Spain, he's not exactly the most successful amigo beyond the Iberian peninsula. Spartak Moscow was a disaster while PSG wasn't the best way to prove himself on the global stage. Simply put, Les Gunners were taking a gamble on a talented bloke yet to prove his worth on the global stage. However, it seems that he's someone who can truly do his best with lesser teams. No disrespect intended, but Almeria, Valencia, and Sevilla can never be Real Madrid or Barcelona. And this is where the biggest question lies: Can Arsenal be now considered a top team compared to the likes of the two Manchester teams, Chelsea, and even Tottenham? You can't blame the Gooners for having a prolonged sense of "we could have done better" ever since Sir A.Fergie succeeded in turning the tables on Le Professeur post-Les Invincibles.

John will only touch on one area. That's because a migraine is coming like winter itself.

The central midfield may be one that El Emerytes will want to look at. It doesn't matter whether it's 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. Les Gunners aren't known for being guns of steel. Instead, they have the tendency to be cannons made of glass. A strong central midfield, however, can go a long way. After all, the central midfield can be seen as the spine connecting the pelvis (i.e. backline) to the head (i.e. attack). In fact, a compact midfield triangle may help. To make this work, however, El Emerytes will need to ask what kind of wide attackers he wants. A compact central midfield triangle would mean more emphasis on pace out wide. In particular, Mesut "Der Ottoman" Özil will want to prove his consistency. Özil's style tends to be more languid with his passes being the reason why he's such a talent. However, such player does have a higher tendency to be panned by Anglo Saxon critics as proven by Dimitar "Berb" Berbatov. If El Emerytes does decide to adopt a compact middle 3, it means Özil will have to work more for the ball due to tracking back more. In this case, the wide attackers and lone forward will have to do the same as well. This is to allow Özil his freedom to express himself on the pitch while making sure the team, on the whole, can be more combative compared to the previous regime.

Verdict:
The future of two players will be a topic of interest in the days, weeks, and months to come. Pierre-Emerick "not just Pierre" Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey are the ones John is talking about. The former is big and fast enough, the latter is versatile enough to excel either as a holding mid or a no.10. Les Gunners are now in need of a more combative approach in the attack and midfield without compromising the continental DNA Le Professeur has instilled in them. It's up to El Emerytes to do that.

Winter's Requiem [冬の鎮魂曲] Pt II

Originally, John intended to do this post much later. This is due to other aspects of the gameplay being of a higher priority. Yet, the heart keeps saying otherwise. Then John's fellow otters (?) decided to lend a paw (?) through this and that. John had half a mind to up something from Berserk. Then he decided not to. Because at least at this point in time, it's not worth it. John has more constructive things to do. Like re-upping Aeravor's in-game profile for this post.

http://republicofotters.blogspot.com/2018/05/winters-requiem-pt-i.html

Edit: John has added certain details on the gameplay here. Also, this song is the only reason why he's able to resist fatigue till now.

And now for the upgraded [x2] bio (done via copy and paste)

They say nurturing an individual will decide which path shall be taken. Some are craftsmen and some turned out to be whores. There are those working their lives away in honest living or frittering away their lives as wastrels belonging to the nobility. Then there are sellswords of every kind while heroes tend to appear should the world see burning, looting, killing, and raping happening all over itself like some abominable disease.
Nurture refers to the character's way of dealing with the trials and tribulations ahead, hence it confers certain bonuses from the beginning of the game. Class affects the parameters while fighting style influences the way a character fights a combat. As for profession, it affects specific ways of an individual's approach in a world no different from a living crucible.

Nature: Geimhreadh; Vánagandr; Requiem From Winter Past
Nature is about two things. Namely, what and who. The former refers to existence while the latter refers to identity. One is physical, the other of the mind and emotions. Nature is one side of a coin while nurture forms the other. Hence, nature gives another set of abilities from the beginning of the game.

Deum: Geimhreadh
[Maximum hit points bonus via Strength increases to 3% per point whenever levelling up]
[Starting critical damage is set at 180%]
[+1 Resolve (Original Resolve score-18)]

Trait: Vánagandr
[Hit points regenerate at 2% of the maximum amount per second]
[Damage dealt via thaumaturgy powers against demons is automatically counted as critical effect]
[Gains 50% of maximum hit points as temporary hit points whenever metallurgy power is activated. Temporary hit points gained cannot exceed 100% of the maximum hit points amount]

Path: Requiem From Winter Past
[Gains 1 stack of Pursuit whenever losing at least 15% of the maximum hit points in a single attack, but lose 1 stack of Ferocity whenever interrupted, dazed, or stunned. Pursuit gives 0.5% critical hit bonus per stack in play. Once Pursuit reaches 10 stacks, all stacks will be cleared and Steelborn will be triggered]
~Steelborn
[Regains 10% Focus per hit with a 20-second cooldown afterwards; any critical hit will reset the cooldown. Critical hit bonus gained via Pursuit is retained for the entire duration. Steelborn lasts for 2 minutes and cannot be triggered again for the next 3 minutes. Pursuit cannot be gained for the next 30 seconds after Steelborn effect expires. Steelborn also gives 20% bonus resistance to all control effects]

Drive and Overdrive: Thviti; Chaos Incarnate
Drive and Overdrive, the two powers which also form a part, if not a major portion, of the individual's identity. Both powers can only be actively triggered. A Drive can be done in any moment of combat, but an Overdrive can only be done if the Focus gauge is at least 70% full. Should the individual's life force falls to a certain level (40% of maximum hit points or below), the Overdrive will be even more powerful than normally expected. Drive powers can be used without restrictions, but usage requires sufficient stamina. As for Overdrive powers, they can only be used once per day.

Drive: Thviti
More than just an ability unique to one individual, Thviti is the official name used for a Vánagandr's ability to teleport and attack at will so long as the target can be seen. Known as "hitter" to the dwarves and "batterer" to the elves, this ability can target up to five enemies within range with a total of five attacks dealt. If less than five targets are available, the number of attacks dealt per target will be randomly allocated. Against a single target, the final hit will deal critical damage.

Overdrive: Chaos Incarnate
Entering a berserk state as the Chaos Incarnate for 20 seconds, Aeravor gains 150% increase in magic damage while any weapon damage dealt is counted as critical damage. Metallurgy power will automatically trigger. After Chaos Incarnate expires, Aeravor takes 20% more damage with his Focus gauge disabled for ten seconds. However, thaumaturgy and metallurgy powers can be used as usual so long they haven't been used prior to Chaos Incarnate mode.

Aspects: Wolfblood; Contra Mundum; Survivor
Aspects deal with the important details of the individual's life. Like how a body is made up of many parts, life is like a structure comprising of gears moving constantly. Aspects are all about paths an individual chooses. However, only one can be chosen. Once the character reaches level 4, a choice must be made on which path to take. From that point, the chosen aspect will progress from one tier to the next. At level 4, the first tier will be unlocked. At level 20, the second tier will be unlocked. Once the character reaches level 40, the final tier will be unlocked.

Wolfblood-Wolfblood refers to the lineage of the Vánagandr even though no one knows exactly what manner of beings they are. Despite boasting elven features, the stark white hair and unnatural capabilities hint at something far more fearsome. Hence, 'tis a little wonder that they are called monsters of the gods by the Teutonians who first gave them the fief of Ván.

Tier 1
Wolf of War: During combat, hit points regeneration will increase at 5% of the maximum amount instead.
Tier 2
Endless Pursuit: Whenever a metallurgy power results in a critical effect, movement speed is increased by 4% and critical hit is increased by 10%.
Tier 3
Monster of the Gods: Whenever a metallurgy power is triggered, a powerful blast will envelop the surrounding area. All enemies caught in the blast take damage equivalent to 25% of their respective maximum hit points. Afterwards, affected targets will receive 10% less healing.

Contra Mundum-Being the enemy of the world is never something a sane person would gladly take up. In fact, one cannot be blamed for saying only the truly insane would desire such a calling. Despite this term existing since the Age of Renown, Contra Mundum remains known to archaeologists, scholars, and well-learned collectors when it comes to the meaning. Yet ironically, the Age of Renown still remains an obscure chapter in the pages of history.

Tier 1
Foebane: Critical chance bonus given by Pursuit per stack is increased to 1%.
Tier 2
Enemy of the Odds: If Chaos Incarnate is triggered while Steelborn is active, the user takes only 10% more damage after Chaos Incarnate expires with the penalty duration reduced to 5 seconds.
Tier 3
Mocking Death Itself: Pursuit can no longer be lost through any means.

Survivor-To fight is never to win, but rather to survive. In the same way beasts and birds of the wild fight to achieve this end, civilisation has always been doing the very same thing despite justifications from those benefitting from it. Yet, those furthest away from the civilised world have never forgotten the roots of greatness as historians and scholars call it.

Tier 1
Master Tracker: Movement speed increases by 10%; enables potion brewing skill.
Tier 2
Steel and Instinct: Critical hit is increased by 10%; critical damage is increased by 12%.
Tier 3
Battlefield Assassin: If at least one ally is present during combat, enemies cannot target the character unless the first attack is made. Any unaware non-boss target attacked will have a 15% chance of being slain outright if the first strike is dealt with the chance reduced to 5% afterwards. Terrain sensor gauge is now set at 100%.

Feat: Monster of Ván
What kind of a feat can one achieve? Countless tales have been sung and many a song composed over this question taunting us for ages, but only two manners of beings can answer it. Either the finest hero that has ever lived or the greatest villain ever known. Upon unlocking all the three tiers of an aspect, the character will eventually discover the answer to this question. Before that, a trial awaits at level 50.

Feat: Monster of Ván
Many say the mark of a monster lies in the conduct, some say the proof of one lies in the power residing within. As one whom his peers called the Monster of Ván, Aeravor has the ability to command all the four deums. A monstrous feat in the eyes of every other Vánagandr as every user of thaumaturgy can only command one deum. Whenever Aeravor uses a thaumaturgy power, there's a 30% chance of the next thaumaturgy power being that of another deum randomly. If this effect triggers, a buff from the list below will trigger according to the deum type. All buffs will last for 10 seconds.

[Earrach: Enters an ethereal state immune to physical damage and control effect with magic resistance increased by 50%. Activating Earrach while controlled will remove all control effects, but the duration will be reduced by half.]
[Samhradh: Gains bonus damage equivalent to the percentage of hit points lost including temporary hit points.]
[Fómhar: Gains a shield absorbing up to 200% of the maximum hit points. Confers immunity to Focus loss for 3 seconds if the shield depletes before the duration ends.]

[Geimhreadh: Weapon attacks will ignore damage resistance. Gains temporary hit points equivalent to 30% of the maximum amount.]

"They said Roshamahat saved the life of her only child, but I knew better. She carried a monster in her womb, that's why you're called the Monster of Ván. But no one should ever judge a mother for exchanging her life for the baby if the truth came out, stillborn or no stillborn."
